Type 1: Classic ADD (=ADHD)
..Symptoms: (more frequent in boys) ..inattentive ..distractible ..hyperactive, fidgety, noisy ..disorganized in time and space----Underlying cause: ..
• deficiency of dopamine
Treatment: dopamine stimulators such as Ritalin (methylphenidate), Dexedrin, Concerta
• diet: high-protein, low carbohydrate, ..aerobic exercises (30 min/day)
Type 2: Inattentive ADD
Symptoms: (more frequent in girls)
• inattentive
• day-dreaming (spacy)
• slow
• low energy level (coach potato) ..a thyroid condition must be excluded
Underlying cause: .. deficiency of dopamine and norepinephrine ..
• Treatment: .. dopamine stimulators such as Ritalin (methylphenidate), Dexedrin, Concerta, Aderall .. plus L-tyrosine (dopamine and norepinephrine stimulator)
• diet: high-protein, low carbohydrate, .. aerobic exercises (30 min/day)
Type 3: Overfocused ADD
• Symptoms: difficulty shifting attention ..inflexible, obsessive (gets stuck)
• argumentative, defiant
• negative thinking, worrying
• differential diagnosis overfocused vs. OCD (Obsessive compulsive disorder)
• Underlying cause:
• imbalance between neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine
• Treatment: .. antidepressants, antipsychotic medication such as Effexor, Risperdal, St. John’s wort (serotonin booster) .. not Ritalin (can aggravate) .. exercises
